AWS announced updates to Knowledge Bases for Amazon Bedrock, which is a new capability announced at AWS re:Invent 2023 that allows organizations to provide information from their own private data sources to improve relevancy of responses.

According to AWS, there have been significant improvements since the launch, such as the introduction of Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible Edition as an additional option for custom vector storage alongside other options like the vector engine for Amazon OpenSearch Serverless, Pinecone, and Redis Enterprise Cloud.

One of the new updates that Amazon is announcing is an expansion in the choice of embedding models. In addition to Amazon Titan Text Embeddings, users can now select from Cohere Embed English and Cohere Embed Multilingual models, both of which support 1,024 dimensions, for converting data into vector embeddings that capture the semantic or contextual meaning of the text data. This update aims to provide users with more flexibility and precision in how they manage and utilize their data within Amazon Bedrock.

To offer more flexibility and control, Knowledge Bases supports a selection of custom vector stores. Users can choose from an array of supported options, tailoring the backend to their specific requirements. This customization extends to providing the vector database index name, along with detailed mappings for index fields and metadata fields. Such features ensure that the integration of Knowledge Bases with existing data management systems is seamless and efficient, enhancing the overall utility of the service.

In this latest update, Amazon Aurora PostgreSQL-Compatible and Pinecone serverless have been added as additional choices for vector stores.

Many of Amazon Aurora’s database features will also apply to vector embedding workloads, such as elastic scaling of storage, low-latency global reads, and faster throughput compared to open-source PostgreSQL. Pinecone serverless is a new serverless version of Pinecone, which is a vector database for building generative AI applications.

These new options provide users with greater variety and scalability in their choice of vector storage solutions, allowing for more tailored and effective data management strategies.

And finally, an important update to the existing Amazon OpenSearch Serverless integration has been implemented, aimed at reducing costs for users engaged in development and testing workloads. Now, redundant replicas are disabled by default, which Amazon estimates will cut costs in half.

Together, these updates underscore Amazon Bedrock’s commitment to enhancing user experience and offering versatile, cost-effective solutions for managing vector data within the cloud, according to Antje Barth, principal developer advocate at AWS in a blog post

Quickwit is an open-source search engine on object storage with subsecond latency for large datasets.

The project made by the authors of the Rust search engine library tantivy recently raised $2.6 million in a seed round co-led by FirstMark and firstminute with many more participants.

Quickwit 0.2 was launched in January with new features such as the ability to ingest Kafka natively with exactly-one semantics, a search stream API, PostgreSQL metastore, tag pruning, and a proper indexing pipeline.

The search engine uses a different approach than Elasticsearch which relies on document replication. Meanwhile, Quickwit indexes documents on a single node and leaves it to an object storage to replicate the resulting index files.

“We need to replicate documents somewhere, to consider them ingested,” Paul Masurel, co-founder of Quickwit wrote in a blog post. “We make it possible for users to plug Quickwit straight into their favorite distributed queue. Right now Quickwit only supports Kafka.”

Common use cases for Quickwit include searching through logs, adding full-text search capabilities to OLAP databases such as ClickHouse, and searching through backups that sit on cloud storage by adding Quickwit index files on your same storage.

Microsoft has made some announcements regarding its support for developing for foldable devices with Flutter.

MediaQuery now has Display Features, which are parts of the display that can be obstructed by hardware features, such as the hinge on the Surface Duo.

When users switch over to the master channel on their local Flutter setup, they can now access a property called ‘displayFeatures’.

When users want to display content on only one screen of Surface Duo, which is the case when they’re showing a dialog, they now have the option of using the ‘DisplayFeatureSubScreen’ widget. The widget is mostly needed for modal routes and is used in the “Dialogs and popups support” PR.

“Some of our contributions have not yet been merged. If you want to give them a try today, this is now far easier to do compared to when we first proposed these changes. Back then you had to configure a custom Flutter Engine. Things are a lot simpler now,” Andrei Diaconu, senior software engineer of Surface Duo Experience wrote in a blog post

Microsoft also added a number of new samples for foldable Flutter that showcase design patterns for foldable devices.

In addition, the Flutter team has recently released Flutter 2.10 in which the most important announcement is that Windows support has reached production quality.
