The API management platform WSO2 has announced a slew of new updates aimed at helping customers manage APIs in a technology landscape increasingly dependent on AI and Kubernetes. The updates span the releases of WSO2 API Manager 4.4, WSO2 API Platform for Kubernetes (APK) 1.2, and WSO2 API Microgateway 3.2, which are all available today.

“As organizations seek a competitive edge through innovative digital experiences, they need to invest equally in state-of-the-art technologies and in fostering the productivity of their software development teams,” said Christopher Davey, vice president and general manager of API management at WSO2. “With new functionality for managing AI services as APIs and extended support for Kubernetes as the preferred platform for digital innovation, WSO2 API Manager and WSO2 APK are continuing to enhance developers’ experiences while delivering a future-proof environment for their evolving needs.”

The company announced its Egress API Management capability, which allows developers to manage their AI services as APIs. It supports both internal and external AI services, and offers full life cycle API management, governance, and built-in support for providers such as OpenAI, Mistral AI, and Microsoft Azure OpenAI.

The egress, or outbound, gateway experience enforces policies, providing secure and efficient access to AI models, as well as reducing costs by allowing companies to control AI traffic via backend rate limiting and subscription-level rate limiting of AI APIs.

WSO2 also announced many new features to support the increase of APIs running on Kubernetes. A new version of the WSO2 API Microgateway — a cloud-native gateway for microservices — has been released, and it aligns with the latest WSO2 API Manager release, improving scalability while also maintaining governance, reliability, and security.

WSO2 APK was updated to align with the gRPC Route specification, improving integration with Kubernetes environment and facilitating better control over gRPC services.

The latest version of WSO2 APK also includes new traffic filters for HTTP Routes, providing more flexibility and precision when routing HTTP traffic.

For better developer productivity in general, WSO2 also improved API discoverability by updating the unified control plane in the WSO2 API Manager so that now developers can search for APIs using the content in API definition files directly in the Developer Portal and Publisher portal.

And finally, to improve security and access control, the control plane also now supports the ability to configure separate mTLS authentication settings for production and sandbox environments. The latest release also adds support for personal access tokens (PAT), which provide secure, time-limited authentication to APIs without a username and password.

WSO2 is updating its open-source identity and access management (IAM) software, Identity Server.

Key highlights of Identity Server 7.0 include a new authentication API, a new visual editor, and one-click access to application templates.

The new authentication API allows developers to build authentication flows that happen directly in an application rather than redirecting to a browser. It supports conditional authentication based on risk factors, user and access context, and other considerations. It also supports the use of OAuth 2.0 and OpenID Connect flows.

The new visual editor allows developers to look at both graphical and code views right next to each other. This allows them to see visually what the user will see as they write code.

The new one-click template access provides developers easy access to a variety of application templates (web, mobile, single-page, etc) and authentication types (one-time password, trusted token provider, third-party authentication, etc).

“Organizations delivering digital experiences need an IAM solution that enables developers to readily adapt to the evolving needs of the business, customers and partners,” said Geethika Cooray, vice president and general manager of identity and access management at WSO2. “Our secret sauce has always been to provide developers an awesome experience that maximizes their productivity and flexibility, and WSO2 Identity Server 7.0 takes that to a whole new level.”

Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, CEO and founder of the API company WSO2, has been awarded the 2022 IEEE TCSVC Research Innovation Award.

The award is decided on by IEEE’s Computer Society Technical Community on Services Computing (TCSVC). It recognizes technologists that have significant influence on “the direction of research and development of the field, transferred theory to practice in significant and innovative ways, and/or enabled the delivery of impactful commercial service products/systems/solutions.”

Over his 30 years in the industry, Weerawarana has led the creation of web service and open-source technologies that were important to the creation of the API economy.

For example, he co-authored specifications such as Web Services Description Language (WSDL) and Business Process Execution Language of Web Services (BPEL4WS).

Weerawarana also worked on open-source technologies like the Apache Axis2 web service engine and the Ballerina programming language.

In addition, in his time at WSO2, the company has driven innovations that are used by Fortune 500 companies, universities, and government agencies. The company’s Choreo platform applies fundamentals of BPEL4WS in a low-code format so that non-programmers can build distributed applications.

“I have been lucky to be at the center of several major software technology waves that have provided opportunities to reshape how technologists build solutions and experiences that improve the way we work, live and play,” said Dr. Weerawarana. “I am deeply honored to be recognized with the 2022 IEEE TCSVC Research Innovation Award, and I look forward to continuing to push the boundaries of how software can support organizations and the people they serve.”

WSO2, provider of open-source technology, today announced the general availability of Choreo, a digital platform as a service. This release is intended to help teams quickly transition digital apps from ideation to production.

According to WSO2, Choreo allows organizations to rapidly deliver new digital experiences by creating and deploying services, integrations, and APIs in hours or days rather than weeks or months.

Because Choreo is built on the Ballerina cloud-native, open-source programming language and runtime, it enables developers of differing skill levels to create apps using varying views of the code.

This allows users to focus on building only the core logic they need while AI assisted development helps to increase productivity and decrease time to market.

This release also brings simplification to DevOps and deployment by replacing custom tooling and scripting with built-in multi-stage, CI/CD delivery as well as deep observability for automatically building, testing, and deploying apps on Kubernetes.

Additionally, Choreo comes with services, integrations, and APIs that are secured by default. This is due to an open standards-based API gateway with security and rate limiting, authentication and authorization, and encryption for all messages.

“The ability to quickly deliver new digital products and services is separating the market leaders from the followers in almost every industry,” said Eric Newcomer, chief technology officer at WSO2. “The Choreo digital platform as a service democratizes the necessary capabilities for building cloud native apps and services. Now developers can immediately collaborate on creating, deploying, securing, and monetizing APIs, integrations and services that deliver business value and great customer experiences.”

The API management company WSO2 announced that its open-source programming language Ballerina’s Swan Lake release is now generally available

Ballerina is designed specifically for developers interacting with the cloud. It aims to simplify the process of being able to use, combine, and create network services.

According to WSO2, it provides “bidirectional mapping of sequence diagrams and code.” This allows developers to switch between working with traditional code and low-code as needed. It also abstracts away a lot of complexity in developing cloud-native applications by providing a way to represent network interactions and streamlining functions related to data usage, configurations, and cloud deployments.

“The move to cloud native applications—which are inherently integrations of services, data, transactions and processes—has rendered many older programming languages obsolete,” said Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana, founder of the Ballerina project and founder and CEO of WSO2. “With our Ballerina Swan Lake release now in GA, development teams for the first time have a modern programming language that simplifies cloud native app development and integration, facilitates collaboration, and enables developers to rapidly innovate new digital products and services.”

The Swan Lake release of Ballerina extends its VS Code plugin to enable developers to use Ballerina to simultaneously edit applications in VS Code graphically and textually. The plugin also includes intelligent code completion.

Other features of Ballerina include a framework for package management, a public web service for sharing modules, a documentation framework, an interactive command-line shell, and built-in tooling for OpenAPI, gRPC, and AsyncAPI.
